Type what you want to calculate in plain English, the way you would ask a colleague: "total sales for the North region in March", "find the price of the product code in F2", "count the orders that are past due". The Excel formula generator writes the formula, says what each part does and shows a small worked example.

It works the other way round too. Paste a formula you inherited and pick "Explain my formula" for a plain-English breakdown, or "Fix my formula" when it returns #N/A, #VALUE! or the wrong number.

Excel formula examples you can ask for

These are the requests people make most. Your columns and ranges will differ: tell the generator where your data is and it uses your exact cells.

How to get the right formula first time

  • Name the columns: "column A has the region, column C the amount".
  • Give the rows or the sheet name if the data is on another sheet.
  • Say the condition exactly: "in March 2026", "more than 100", "the word Paid".
  • Say what the answer should look like: a total, a count, a yes/no label, a list.
  • Pick your Excel version. "Excel 2019 or older" avoids XLOOKUP, FILTER, UNIQUE, LET and LAMBDA, which older copies of Excel do not have.

Excel Formula Generator questions

How do I turn plain English into an Excel formula?

Describe the result you want and where the data is, for example "sum column C when column A is North". The generator returns one formula that starts with =, a line for each part, and an example with sample values. Copy the formula into the cell where you want the answer.

Can it explain or fix a formula I already have?

Yes. Paste the formula and choose "Explain my formula" to get what it does part by part, or "Fix my formula" to get what was wrong and a corrected version.

Should I use VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP?

XLOOKUP is easier and can look left, but it only exists in Excel 365 and Excel 2021. VLOOKUP works in every version: use FALSE as the last argument for an exact match, and keep the lookup column first. INDEX with MATCH works everywhere and can look in any direction.

Will the formula work in my version of Excel?

Set "Excel version" before you generate. With "Excel 2019 or older" it sticks to functions such as SUMIFS, COUNTIFS, INDEX and MATCH instead of the newer dynamic-array functions.

Do these formulas work in Google Sheets?

Most do. SUMIF, SUMIFS, COUNTIFS, VLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH, IF, IFERROR and XLOOKUP all exist in Google Sheets with the same commas between arguments. Check any less common function before you rely on it.

Why does my formula show #N/A or #VALUE!?

#N/A from a lookup usually means the value is not in the lookup range, often because of an extra space or a number stored as text. #VALUE! usually means text where a number or date was expected. Paste the formula with "Fix my formula" and describe your data to get a fix.

Is the formula tested on my data?

No. The generator never sees your spreadsheet, so try the formula on a few rows first and check the ranges cover all your data before you copy it down.

Is the Excel formula generator free?

Yes. It is free to use in your browser and you do not need an account.
